9-11

Eight years ago today, I sat with the rest of my 11th grade classmates taking the ASVAB test. My high school was filled with members of the US Army, there to proctor our examinations. A soldier came into the room whispered to the soldier monitoring our exam, and then left again. Time after time this happened. But I was so engrossed in my exam, I barely noticed.

It wasn't until Noon, when we had finished our exam, that we heard the news. Terrorists had crashed two commercial planes into the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center in New York City, one into the Pentagon, and a fourth diverted from Washington DC and crashed into a field. And more reports were to come.

What?

That's a lot for a 16-year-old to digest in one breath.

The remainder of the day was spent with a pit in my stomach, as we watched the news reports ... and the escalating death count. I was mad. I was bewildered. I was sad. I don't think I even grasped the totality of the situation.

But what I remember most from that day, was the sense of safety I felt surrounded by so many members of our nations army. Without men and women like them, the rest of us could not continue to live our daily lives with the peace that we do.

Thank you Grandpa, Uncle Lawrence, Luke and David - and so many others like you - for the sacrifices you have made to keep our country safe.
